Painting, Acrylic on Wood
Size: 12 W x 12 H x 1 D in
This is a mixed media piece on 1/8" panel, framed in a black frame, wired and ready to hang. I chose charcoal and ashes to be the main medium to symbolize mortality, humanity and redemption. Heart wrenching occurrences were happening in my personal community and in my greater community of Austin, TX when this piece was made. A friend who is a mom and wife was fighting for her life after being hit by a truck while helping a stranger who's car was stalled on the side of the road. A person who we now know as "the Austin bomber" was terrorizing our city, and we had lost precious people. The pain and suffering were raw when I made this piece. The details of what my community was going through was heart wrenching, but I also know that heart wrenching things are happening with all of us, everywhere, right along-side the ordinary, day to day of our lives. How one lives through the pain varies, but one thing my community does every week on Sunday morning is pray. We pray together, some on our knees, some standing, but we are together. The souls of each of us ask in unison to be heard, to have mercy, to bring right and good. The prayers of the people are powerful because they are spoken out of our depths into the ear of the Almighty...and they are heard. They are heard...we're not alone. You're not alone.
