Definition of descant 1. 1a: a melody or counterpoint sung above the plainsong of the tenor b: the art of composing or improvising contrapuntal part music; also: the music so composed or improvised c: soprano, treble d: a superimposed counterpoint to a simple melody sung typically by some or all of the sopranos 2. 2: discourse or comment on a theme There are very few things that all humans have in common: our emotion, our relationships with one another, our shared stewardship of the world we live in. Using color, abstract reference to landscape, and found objects sewn or glued to the surface, each of my paintings serves as an emotional self-portrait at the time of its making. In focusing on the most personal moments of my life, I seek to visually describe what is perhaps the most universal aspect of the human condition. These paintings are my descant: a variation on the age-old artistic theme of emotion, one of only a few things we can claim as a commonality.

I’m a painter in the Winston Salem area of North Carolina, USA. My work explores the relationship between God and landscape, seeking out the divinity and romance in the mountains, streams, and trees that I live within. I live and work from a home studio in Lewisville NC, with my husband, our daughter, our two rescue dogs and cat.
