Publicidad Espontánea (Hamburguesa y Papas Fritas) Painting

This painting is inspired by what I like to refer to as “spontaneous advertising”, a form of advertisement found in streets or inside small businesses in Costa Rica’s capital and in rural areas. The ads are typically hand painted on walls and sign posts, and are created by the owner of the business or by a person specialized in this kind of work. A primitive style prevails, common motives include food, auto spare parts, furniture and famous American characters like Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse. For the last five years, this form of advertising has been gaining recognition within the art and design community in Costa Rica, but for many years it was not recognized nor valued due to is lack of professional technique. For a long period, I photographed hundreds of this kind of adverts around Costa Rica and reinterpreted them on paintings and drawings. So far I have created over 50 artworks inside this concept. Because of the current digitalisation this kind of adverting is disappearing from public spaces and my art acts as documentation. With this project I want to pay homage to this beautiful form of art; full of sincerity, freedom, boldness, and it is my expression of gratefulness for building a metaphorical bridge to my homeland Costa Rica.
