About The Artwork

We have spectacular sunsets looking west towards Worthing from here in Shoreham by Sea. The shallow beach gives a long expanse of greyish sand at low tide which turns to pale gold at those times. The title refers to a favourite pigment from the Golden Open range namely Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold. Also used here are the traditional earth colours of Raw Umber and Raw Sienna. The yellow is Arylamide Yellow. The blue is the blue that always comes first to hand, Paynes Grey named after the 18th Century painter William Payne. Impasto is also prominent in places.

I have been painting for many decades but have only recently exhibited to a wider public. Previously, exhibitions and sales were at my home and garden studio on Shoreham Beach. Formal artistic education since school started with the Aesthetics course at university and since then continued with lengthy one-to-one contact with artists who have developed specific techniques. The canvases mainly inhabit an area in the interstices between pure abstract and representations of landscapes and seascapes. I aim to create an area in which the viewer can easily develop an individual interpretation of a scene or atmosphere. Hence, my art is more evocative than representational. Important aspects are depth and variety of texture, purity of colour and luminescence. The nearby sea and the ever changing sky above it which are visible from the window have provided a constant inspiration.
