Often times we are obsessed with ruins, not only because it has a mesmeric attraction, but because it signifies time travel from the past to the future within the present. The celebration of ruins is intrinsic to popular culture with an uncanny allure, too difficult to resist. Notwithstanding the impression of melancholy, it epitomizes all that was humanly possible in the past. In its present form of wretchedness; it oozes an aura of the pristine edifice that it once was. Such being the case, it also signifies in the crumbling visage, an inevitable process of history, to which, we, too will eventually succumb. I recall two films from the masters of Cinema – Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, who in their own inimitable style have brought forth their concept of “Ruinstalgia” (ruin and nostalgia) in “Jalsaghar-1958” and “Khandahar-1983” respectively. In the former Ray has portrayed the raw passion for grandeur and the passing of an aristocrat through the opulence of Jalsaghar (Music Room) while in the latter; Mrinal Sen depicts the slow decline into despair in the backdrop of the ruins (Khandahar) of a mansion, yet a silver lining of hope. The ruins is brought to life by Sen, which conveys its own message in its expressions of silent emotion. Both are masterpieces, palpably well ahead of their times, though created in a hiatus of quarter of a century to symbolize life laced with seediness, yet rejoice in the historical perspective of the preordained. I look at it as an ode to the future amidst the myriad colors spreading their hues in the shape of moss and weeds overshadowing the brick and mortar, yet radiating ample light to outshine darkness and despondency into a fresh world of creation.
