Inspiration for my work comes from many walks along flowerfields (tulips), in heathlands, polders and woods in The Netherlands and rugged majestic mountainous regions like Jotunheimen en Rondane in Norway, the Alps and the Dolomites in Italy. The paintings are precisely translations of feelings, observations and experiences during the walks: the grandeur of nature, immateriality, emptiness, colours or spatiality, colors of flowers/trees/nature, mist, reflections of light in water, the wind, waves, the light (morning, day, evening), atmospheric light, the temperature (cold and warmth), ice and glaciers. I try to find the right balance between abstraction and figuration. Painted with professional quality acrylic on high quality canvas. Ready to hang. Education: Academy of Arts Sint Joost Breda The Netherlands. Diploma of Higher Education 1987. I graduated cum laude. Museums: I exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Breda Netherlands (2018 and 2019) and the Jan Cunen Museum Oss Netherlands. Grants: 1991 1994 1995 1996 1998 1999 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006

Netherlands
Inspiration for my work comes from my many walks along flower- and tulip fields, along the North Sea coast, in polders, heathlands and forests in the Netherlands and rugged mountainous regions such as Jotunheimen in Norway and the Mont Blanc massif. I work both figurative and abstract, and on the boundary of abstraction and figuration, in different styles and with different subjects – I take that freedom as an artist, it's also about the pleasure of making art. But the works of art always have to do with nature and the landscape. Info: More information can be found on my website: Matthieu van Riel. Education: 1983-1987 Painting, drawing and monumental design. Graduated laude. Art Academy St. Joost in Breda. 1977-1980 Publicity and graphic design at the St. Joost Art Academy in Breda, The Netherlands. Since 1988 I have been working full-time as a professional visual artist in my own studio. Exhibits: In 2018 and 2019 I exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum in Breda, at the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss, at the Lisa Norris Gallery in London, at Galerienegenpuntnegen in Roeselaere in Belgium, and in galleries, art institutes and art fairs throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. My paintings can be found in many public and private collections in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, France, China, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Sweden, Hungary, Canada and USA. Stipends and grants received from the Dutch government: 1991 1994 1995 1996 1998 1999 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 NBKS, Noordbrabants Fund and the Fund for Visual Artists in Amsterdam.
