The Limits of Xianglusi Painting

A light mixed media study attempting to catch what cannot be said in words about a hidden gem of Taoist architecture. Xianglusi is a small Taoist monastery at the shore of the Yellow River in China, and it was something between a coincidence and a gesture of heartwarming Chinese hospitality that lead us there. One could remember it as unimposing, but then the small part of it shining through the figurative elements in this artwork is placed on a single standing rock column, it’s rooftop dissolving in the gray Chinese sky. And then again you see the border between earthly architecture and heaven – wooden elements of the roof construction in red and green – clearly marked! A hello from the intertwining of heaven and earth. To mirror the at first view nondescript appearance of the featured place then unfolding to the limits, the artwork’s support is all recycled material, originating from a photo-canvas with a sunset, as the hanger is from the backside of an old clip-on frame. Well hung in private room. A light small work to pause for a moment, open to reflection and mind-drifting.
