About The Artwork
The red velvet ant, sometimes called a cow killer, is actually a member of a family of wasps called Mutillidae. The females are wingless and resemble large, hairy ants. This female was collected in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and taken to the art studio where it was examined in detail through a dissecting microscope. The brilliant color and hairiness of this creature is breathtaking. I used black ink and pens for the form and details and acrylic paint for the vivid color.
