Newcomer to the desert art scene, art dealer and artist Roberta Brito was born June 8, 1966 in Recife, a town in the northeast region of Brazil. She lived most of her life in Miami, Florida where she began her art career over two decades ago as an art dealer. Eventually she ventured into her own business and returned to Brazil, this time Sao Paulo where she became the renowned owner and director of a gallery in one of Sao Paul’s most sought after neighborhoods. There she worked with many artists both well-known and up-and coming in her belief that all artists deserve an opportunity to display their talent to the public. After some time, wanderlust and a desire to see and experience new things, she left to travel in Europe and then returned to the U.S. In October of 2018 Roberta was diagnosed with terminal metastatic liver cancer and life once again took a drastic turn. With her future uncertain she engaged with several treatment options and during a round of chemotherapy was hospitalized with an infection. After leaving the hospital, feeling hopeless and bereft, she found her way to art once again but this time in an unexpected way. As a way of coping with pain, trauma, sleeplessness, sadness and stress - she began to paint. Roberta’s style can best be described as pop/abstract expressionism. It reflects both her humor, her sophistication and her years immersed in art and travelling. It is both mature and childlike. Her color palette is bright and vibrant with strong textural components and an intuitive dimension that seems to imbue a living quality to her canvasses. In her work she displays an ability to bring together her depth of experience, her unique mathematical reasoning, her passion for visual art, music, poetry and the spiritual and symbolic association of colors and shapes. Highly energetic, deeply personal, her body of work transcends the individual experience and speaks to a universal expression of contemporary life.
