On a deserted rooftop, birds are resting. A person watches the scene from below; the birds appear serene. Longing for inner peace, the person becomes one with them. Minju Gwak is a Korean-born artist based in Tokyo, whose work is grounded in living form—the structural essence of life—and in personal experiences of nature. Her visual narratives are not fixed stories but evocative spaces in which viewers are invited to awaken their own memories and interpretations. At the heart of her practice lies a concept she coined: Reawakening of Life. Gwak likens the sensation of perceiving life to adjusting the focus of a lens: clarity is found only in a fragile middle ground. As the sense of life recedes, it becomes strangely comforting—but if it drifts too far, it loses vitality and gives way to unease. Conversely, as the sensation grows more intense, it can feel overwhelming, even unbearable; and when it draws too close, it approaches a state of death, where nothing can be felt. Reawakening of Life refers to a shifting tension between vitality and mortality—a diverse range of sensations of life and death. This experience is both her creative drive and her deepest source of inspiration. Because such sensations arise most clearly in solitude and in nature, these spaces have naturally become recurring motifs in her work. From these embodied experiences, inspiration sparks and travels—kindling itself in various forms, and rising like smoke into quiet, personal dreamscapes seen only through her eyes.
