Reticulation 3 is a carved acrylic painting on an unframed wood panel, wired and ready to hang. The edges of the panel are painted white with an eggshell finish. For me, making art is about dipping into my reservoir of motifs and techniques, refining them, discovering new ones, and then combining the old and new in fresh ways. The Reticulation paintings continue that approach. I created these paintings by repeatedly adding and removing acrylic paint – alternately spackling, stamping, spattering, and dripping, then sanding, carving, scratching, scraping to create a rich interplay of textures. The surface richness is visual as well as tactile. I want every element to invite a second look, and a third, and a fourth. The layers of spatters, drips, stamps, and carvings in Reticulation create a netted, interwoven (i.e., reticulated) pattern over the whole surface, without dominant focal points or stark contrasts. Viewers have described the imagery as branches, blood vessels, nerves, and fragments. The Reticulation paintings are not fully modular (as is the earlier Reservoir series, also available here on saatchiart.com), but their elements connect in at least two different ways: all of the carved circles will connect in one arrangement; in another, all of the branch/vein forms will connect. Red is the dominant color in Reticulation 3, though it reads more as pink from a distance. There are accents of green and cerulean blue. The overall tone is vibrant yet calm. The larger circles and thin parallel lines are carved into the painted acrylic surface. It works nicely as a diptych with Reticulation 2, or combined with the other three Reticulation paintings for a single four-panel piece.

Intricate labor-intensive techniques have always drawn me like a magnet, from my earliest endeavors in cut paper, collage, and realistic oil painting to my current work in acrylic and wax pastel. In graduate school I began the work with layered acrylic paint which has evolved into my carved acrylic paintings. Those highly textured pieces, in turn, spawned the next generation of work in which I use wax pastels to create rubbings on polypropylene sheets (Yupo). The rubbings are made from the surfaces of my paintings additional created textures. I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. From there, in pursuit of education, employment, and adventure, I found my way to all fifty United States as well as Israel, Palestine, Canada, and Italy. Raleigh, NC, has been my home since 2004.
