About The Artwork

Just like Josef Albers developed his Homage to the Square painting variations, this is the first painting in a series in which I will be exploring color juxtapositions and variations based on the limited structure of nested rhombuses, similar to the “God’s eye” designs of colorful yarn weavings created by the Huichol indigenous people of Mexico. The series is called “Rhombus Rumba” as a way to associate shapes and colors with the structural nature of music and dance. The name of the project is based on the play of two words: rhombus, which represents the nested geometric shapes of the God’s eyes, and rumba, which represents a Cuban African dance. Painted on Arches 300 lb coldpressed watercolor paper.

I am an American artist and visual arts teacher. After teaching Visual Arts at BAICA in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the Future Leadership Academy in Hainan, China, I am now teaching at the Cornerstone School in Ocala, Florida. I obtained a BFA degree with a concentration in painting and printmaking from the University of Michigan. I had my first individual art show in 1991 at the Luigi Marrozzini Gallery in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, where I lived for 11 years before moving to Argentina in 1997. I have had numerous individual art shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have participated in many collective exhibitions and art fairs. My artwork is found in private collections in the United States, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. I define my work as chromatic geometry, a trajectory I have followed relentlessly since 1991. I was awarded a Pollock-Krasner foundation grant for the year 2013. I received the 2012 Arte Espacio prize in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Artistic statement: My visual language is within the realm of geometric abstraction, expressly chromatic geometry. I find this to be the perfect milieu in which I can work with simple forms, without distractions, and in which I can experiment with the pictorial elements that inspire me the most: color, texture, pattern and movement. I have been inspired by indigenous textiles, especially from Guatemala, a place I have visited often. In my paintings and watercolors I strive to create a kind of visual and musical poetry of color and movement. I like to call this poetry of color "coloreography" because it combines, precisely, color and choreography.
