It started a very long time ago. Back then I didn’t know that it had a name. It was just a feeling. Seeing patterns I didn’t recognize. There have been many distractions along the way. Years of being caught up with approvals. I didn’t know that I was hardwired to seek, to be a deep diver. Looking for happiness in the wrong places. Looking outward when the gaze needed to be inward. To know the self. The chaotic self. The needy self. Maybe I was feeling the moving ground beneath my life – I wanted some rock to cling to. I gulped down all the conventions. Church God Sacraments Front pew Catechism Seminary Celibacy Then over an unperceived amount of time it all became irrelevant. It evaporated before I knew it was gone. Hard-wired to be a seeker. Where I was looking it was not to be found. I don’t feel betrayed. I don’t think I’ve traded one structure for another. Freeing only to imprison again. I think this is my true nature. But it is unending…

David Bender is a Brooklyn based artist who studied at Seattle University, the Burnley School of Art, and the New York Academy of Art. Working in painting, sculpture and street art, Bender’s work weaves together remnants of experiences, dreams, thoughts, and events to create meditations on chance. His practice is influenced by his interest in the eastern wisdom traditions, and his works are imbued with a spirituality and a desire to explore the layers of reason, randomness and logic that make up each of our consciousnesses. Bender is the recipient of the Best in Show Award from the Woodstock School of Art Regional Exhibition, the Art Times Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association Invitational and is in the permanent collection of the Brinton Museum.
