This painting is one of a series exploring the vast skies that dominate my local meadows at Runnymede. Each one marks the progress through one spring and shows a different weather and a different time of day. This one focusses on the American Bar Association's memorial to Magna Carta, which was sealed 800 years ago somewhere on this meadow. The memorial is a small pavilion which is floodlit at night, and one April evening not long after sunset the colours of the floodlights happened to match the colours that were rapidly draining from the sky - a combination of the last hints of the sunset and the distant lights of Windsor. This painting still excites me, not just for it's vividness and economy, nor simply for how recognisable it is for anyone who has driven to Windsor at night but because some of the colours and combinations of colours I first used here have gone on to be staples of mine - the peculiar lemon yellow that is played against the oranges, the deep, rich blues which later allowed me to find a technique for making colours change before your eyes and the understanding of how to use black to make colours brighter, not duller are all very unusual and first started to appear in this set of work in general and this picture in particular. This painting is unframed and on box canvas. As with all my work it is made from high end artist grade paints which despite being hard to use provide lively, intense and very long lasting colours.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
