SAINT SEBASTIEN IN FRENCH—ST SEBASTIAN IN ENGLISH

I chose the French title because I live in France.
A traditional subject in art and literature since the middle ages. Before this he was usually painted as Eros or Cupid in Greek and Roman times.
The subject was especially popular in the Renaissance—and the decades following—when the human body again became increasingly central in paintings.
Why did I paint him?
Well, I’ve always painted the nude (and came close to getting into trouble many years ago for a work I submitted to an exhibition in Pretoria—it was based on Courbet’s L'Origine du monde). So I’ve gone back to the nude, and intend to paint several contemporary interpretations of traditional subjects over the next few months.
It’s acrylic on canvas, measuring 70 cms wide x 90 high.
I have painted St Sebastien before and you’ll find him on this site if you scroll around.
Please contact me if you have any queries.

Bonjour. I'm Ray Johnstone, and I live in a small medieval village in south west France. I spend most of my time painting, writing and teaching art, but I still find time to play petanque most afternoons (the game they play with iron balls all over France). I firmly believe that everyone - yes, everyone - can learn to paint and draw, and I teach children and adults, as well as individuals, families and groups. (For more information about art holidays, simply cut and paste the following: ’Ray Johnstone France’). If you’d like a quote on any painting you might like to think about commissioning me to do, please email me the details. (Please keep in mind that I can paint almost any subject FROM A PHOTOGRAPH). I’ll get back to you right away.
