“Scape” Painting

We see a mix of lush vista of nature and wreckage, punctuated by the images of 3 women in a dance gesture- each waving a kerchief with the iconic Zamboanga vinta sail motif. The grace and the color of the dancing women underline Mother Nature’s beauty in spite of the frequent calamities like flood, earthquake, and drought, happening in the natural landscape, not only in my city but globally. Environmental protection is the emerging issue here, and Art is one way to address it. Global warming and the havoc of flood it brings, are only some expressions of the actual crises produced by pollution and the exploitation of nature. Repentant perhaps of his unmindfulness which brought this present mess, a man moves a heavy hourglass (all the more made heavier by a perching checkerboard-clad youth clicking a photo with her techno gadget) as if to fast-pace a solution. The future seems grey. But there is still time.
