Art has always been a passion of mine, I enjoy exploring the deeper meanings behind art pieces and how different people can interpret them. Politics is slowly becoming more important to me and I am becoming increasingly aware of how decisions made by the government today, will affect my future. Artists have wanted to leave their mark on the world for centuries. It is astounding how one artist’s view can be illustrated and defined perfectly through art, allowing the viewer to question the society they live in and use past political artworks to identify whether issues have been resolved. The art piece is a metaphorical illustration to show how due to political sensationalism Muslims are demonized. For example, in 2014, 32 Americans were killed by Muslim extremists on American soil, whereas 33,599 were killed by other Americans with guns. Bearing in mind the statements issued by the American president regarding Muslims, this appears to indicate that in some places Islamaphobia has become a fact of life. I aim to inform the audience of the constant abuse Muslims, especially Muslim women go through which is reinforced in my art piece where the hand over the mouth symbolises the removal of the ability to speak freely and the hands pulling at the scarf suggests the physical abuse that Muslim women experience daily. The purpose of my artefact is to represent the prejudice and discrimination against many Muslim women who choose to wear a headscarf and how the media and some high-profile politicians have scapegoated Muslims by igniting a flame of hatred. I hope that the audience feels uncomfortable yet inspired by the image.
