After living in New York's Soho, Nancy Wyllie is now based in a coastal studio in Rhode Island. Her work is inspired by the coastline in this state as well as travels throughout the Caribbean and Central America. In working with acrylic in addition to oil, she is able to apply multiple layers of transparent color and meet the challenge of the relative immediacy demanded by this medium. Acrylic also allows her to sculpt heavyweight archival papers in new and exciting ways that refer to marine life. The seascape tradition is informed by a 21st century sensibility that continues to define her practice. Bio :Trained as a painter in the classical tradition at Rhode Island School of Design/ RISD, Wyllie moved into the area of Abstraction ten years ago. Her paintings and mixed media works reside in numerous public and private collections from Switzerland to Tokyo. The Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane University in New Orleans acquired 'Observatory' in May 2021. The State Darwin Museum in Moscow made 'Moth Vitals' part of their permanent collection in 2017 and her painting "Oceanside' was selected for a recent summer fundraising auction event at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. In April 2024, 3 paintings similar in concept and execution to 'The Deep' and 'Perfect Storm' were purchased for the Boston Children's Hospital, Ophthalmology Wing. Wyllie's work is currently on exhibition at Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane University in "Legacy Traces : Recent Additions to the Museum Collection."
