About The Artwork

Original Acrylic on canvas, painted entirely with palette knives. This painting started out being painted as a live demo on the Rooftop Patio at the #WacoWineryTastingRoomandRooftopPatio on #AustinAve in #DowntownWacoTexas. The remaining work was completed over the next week back in my #McGregorTexas Studio. Inspired by a trip years ago to Sedona Arizona, one of my favorite trips ever that included a visit to Tlaquepaque along the river in Sedona. This fantastic place built in the style of an old Mexican village, inspired me to use my photo reference as a starting point to create an imaginary scene adding to the scene as needed with artist license to create a painting with vibrant color and texture. The resulting painting was very much UNLIKE the blowing, rainy, winter day where I began the painting! An ESCAPE! It takes me away and I hope it does you too!

For Waco, Texas-based professional artist and instructor Lee James, it’s all about color and texture. Lee’s style is best described as blending aspects of impressionism and realism with a strong emphasis on bold, vivid, even playful use of color in light-filled paintings. His favored medium is acrylic as it can be used like oils or watercolor. Thrilled to embark on each new painting, his ultimate reward is your enjoyment of the “worlds” he creates in each painting. Lee has a lifelong interest in architecture, having owned two National Historic Register Plantations and even designed homes. Structures of some type will almost always be found in his landscapes. A love of coastal, boats, cars and trucks, and animals have also had a profound influence in his work as well as a strong interest in nocturnal scenes. Lee is not a “high noon” painter. Early morning, later in the afternoon, and evening…”these are the times when colors are more intense, subjects are more interesting” and will always be part of his works. With an intense love of color, Lee rarely mixes color on the palette, choosing instead to pickup multiple colors, with a palette knife, and “let it happen” as the paint goes on the canvas. “The result is far more exciting!”
