About The Artwork

The title 'seed' comes from the seed pods that you can see between the stones at the top of the painting. They were collected from a tree on the grounds of the local university campus here in Adana, Turkey. The stones and other natural objects that appear either come from a collection of things that I pick up on walks, or they are invented (e.g. the tangled vegetation on the left, which is an almost abstract part of the picture.) I drew a rough overall abstract design of shapes in thin charcoal sticks on the bare canvas before choosing exactly what objects to put in. Then I found objects that worked with that design and began to paint them in using acrylics and acrylic inks. I prefer to use natural objects that aren't often thought of as being pretty, such as stones, weeds and so on. Although we often don't stop to examine these things, they have their own beauty and fascinating details. (There is a lot of detail in a work like this, so it takes a long time to paint.) The painting was exhibited at an international art fair in Ankara in 2023. The painting is protected by varnish and only artist’s quality acrylics were used. It's shipped without stretchers rolled up in a tube.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
