ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was inspired by a series of lines first produced during a life workshop where the model moved continuously and the drawing medium was attached to a bamboo length and used standing above a roll of floor-based paper. To keep the energy and fleeting impressions of this large area of work a print was taken and then directly painted onto in a further life session with the same model. In using the silky print paper as a medium, I discovered an exciting and immediate surface to work on. Within this exploration of complex human form is a story to be told - one that is individual and potentially personal to the viewer. This painting won the ‘Best in Watercolour’ award Welland Valley Art Society, Stamford. Oct 2022. The guest judge’s comments were:- "So much movement left to right, background to foreground. Deliciously pared back palette and perfect composition"

Prue Pye - artist statement I am a painter. My whole approach seeks to capture the multi faceted layers and non topical colour that exists within us.. It is a search for an essential humanness, and therefore faces are not recorded, but hinted at; a sense of universality and truth. My work is about trying to understand how we are perceived, how that is informed and whether that fleeting perception is important. The paintings use and embody, strength and frailty, energy and movement and a self imposed position of uncertainty is part of this. Faced with a beautiful view - the way in which we seem to measure, display, judge ourselves - my reaction is to turn and find something hidden and less apparent. The physicality of placing colour on a surface, in ways that express or communicate is a vital part of why I paint and has developed from a need to find a language that connects beyond the immediate.
