ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Shifting baseline (blue) follows my interest in the origin and 'displacement' of the Hydrangea plant for example. From the Greek "hydor," meaning water, and "angos," meaning jar or vessel It is an exploration of this floral motif using fluid planes of acrylic colour. Composed on A1 smooth pale turquoise Daler card. It will be professionally rolled and wrapped in a large study cardboard tube for safe transport.

Through her practice, Amanda Bracken explores colour as a sense perception and the use of colour in cultural value systems. Her broad outlook has included themes of identity politics and cultural divisions and then again, she is 'always seduced by the beauty of the natural world'. Observing the tangible world, subtle illusionistic drawings offer a starting point for the imaginative and physical possibilities of paint. Bracken has exhibited her art in London and nationally and was featured in the Telegraph magazine in 2004. Awarded prize winner at Camberwell Open 2015 London. Selected exhibitions include: Canvas & Cream Gallery inaugural group exhibition London (2012); Dialogues in America-Latina, Institute of Education London (2012); Creekside Open 2011, selected by Phillida Barlow at APT Gallery Deptford (2011); Parallax Art Fair London (2011); Drawing Two Hundred, Drawing Room, London (2005); ‘Ida Branson memorial award for MA Exhibition 2004’ at the Atkinson Gallery Somerset. Bracken has engaged in research and led art projects for Gallery education, including: Serpentine, Estorick Collection, Hayward, and Victoria Miro Galleries. She currently teaches drawing and painting in London. Training includes an MA in Fine art, Central Saint Martins UAL and Degree in joint Art and Dance, Goldsmiths college London.
