About The Artwork
The piece "Shoeshine" depicts the artist's deceased grandfather getting his shoe polished. The photograph that inspired this painting was originally taken by the artist's grandmother, presumably in the 1960s around Bosnia or Montenegro. The monumental piece is a depiction of narratives and how freely artists and audiences create them in lieu of their own presence in history. "Shoeshine" was originally displayed as part of the solo exhibition "I dream only about them, but it is never quite my family" at Reflektor Gallery (Užice), and is currently on display at the Contemporary Museum of Art in Novi Sad, Serbia.
