About The Artwork

The depiction of the different layers of the rainforest was intended to show its richness and abundance, but instead turned out to give the impression that the rainforest is shrinking, because of the circle it is contained in. When I was working on this painting, I was thinking of mining-related deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. The rainforest has existed for 50 million years and nearly half of the world's rainforests have been razed by the modern humans in just one century. The rainforest has an important role on life on our planet and life is the main part of the self-regulating system that determines the physical nature of our planet. The mining process leads to the removal of nitrogen from the soil. Land and rivers are contaminated with mercury and flora and fauna are destroyed. All these results in a lack of forest regrowth after the mining sites are abandoned. Speaking from experience,I can state that a great volume of steel, which is mostly imported from Brazil, is misused in industries in developed countries. We,the people involved in these industries do not care for the resources involved in iron processing plants, in infrastructure or in the millions of hectares of forest lost by burning, despite the scarcity of wood, just because we can afford it. Our waste leads to the approval of new mines and the expansion of the existing ones. The big problem in society is that the politicians and businesses representatives quantify climate risks in financial terms, such as: property damage due to natural disasters, risk of crop failure due to extreme heat, economic losses due to rising sea levels, disruption in raw materials sourcing, unstable markets condition, shifts in public opinion, litigations...
