I am not only an artist but also a silversmith and former dive instructor who is passionate about water. For ten years I lived in The Sudan, Africa, a country, with very little rainfall - upon my return to the UK I found myself thinking more and more about this essential resource and how we often take it for granted. My jewellery collection tries to encapsulate all the different forms of this precious resource and now my paintings, over time, have harmonised with the progressive ‘ebb and flow’ nature of water, coming to represent a greater metaphorical standing within my work. I aim to exhibit the ever-persistent endurance of water that is a keystone to life. The sheer tenacity displayed by water is personified in its human tendencies, bearing the characteristics we hold most dear - water is patient, dynamic and pragmatic. Having already employed the use of copper leaf in my works; the beautiful, reflective qualities of silver leaf and fine silver wire presented the next logical step to my work as it experiences this metaphorical transition through the conceptualisation of water. This artwork has painted edges so does not need a frame, it is painted and hand-stitched on a linen stretched canvas. Hanging wires are attached to the back - ready to hang on the wall. I only use high quality artist paints that have good light fast qualities, real silver leaf and real silver in my work. This painting has been varnished and a sterling silver plate with my Hallmark serves as my signature.

Fine artist and silversmith Born in the UK but inspired by her experience of life in Africa, Julia’s colour-rich, textured oil paintings relate to a Sudanese custom of welcoming strangers - large vessels that are used in food storage and preparation are also left with water for passing strangers. Julia hopes that others will be inspired by the warm humanity of her African friendships: ‘It’s wonderful to be able to offer comfort to others and to experience the kindness of people in a place where you are just a visitor.’ In her work as a silversmith Julia uses traditional techniques and innovative original designs to create unique pieces of jewellery using only the finest materials. ‘I am passionate about the work I do, I constantly push the parameters of my designs, striving to produce mini pieces of 'art' to be treasured and passed on from one generation to the next.’ More recently Julia has started to incorporate real silver into her fine-art work weaving into the canvases, adding fine silver leaf and using her hallmark as a signature on those paintings that contain silver. A few years ago Julia returned to Africa staying two years in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, where she taught art at The French International School and exhibited at the East African Art Biennale and the East African Art Safari where her paintings were chosen to travel to Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. Julia is currently the Chair and a curator of The Mill Exhibition, Guildford and a member of The Society of British Jewellers. Her work can be found in collections world wide including China, USA, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Sudan, Tanzania, Croatia, and the UK.
