Showed at the The Other Art Fair
As with the other Simple Harmonic Motion paintings, I was lying down at the beach, watching my husband and kids playing in the water. The girls were leap-frogging over my husband, and taking turns throwing a beach ball amongst each other. I was enjoying the sun, listening to my old transistor radio, and suddenly noticed the brights and lows of sunlight on the sand crystals near me. I took a few snapshots of the sand, trying to capture the individual crystals, but those images didn't come out very good. So when back in the studio, I tried to imagine the sand up close, and the colours, the dry areas versus the wet. This is the result. It is a much larger piece than the other Sand, and is also framed with Oak.

My painting practice has been split into two distinctly different processes: Firstly, traditional painting on canvas displayed on the wall; and secondly, the creation of hybrid painting which focuses on process and the materiality of acrylic/latex paint. The latter uses steel mesh rather than canvas and is formed into large scale 3-d floor paintings. The former process, traditional painting on canvas, is my current practice. My current research involves collecting personal interviews from friends and family about their memories of childhood, coupled with tangible materials such as photographs, postcards, letters, diaries, maps, vintage objects etc. The data is collated to construct a contextual framework, a narrative that will become a series of painted works. The work is testimony to preservation and/or deterioration of memory through time, the impact of trauma, and the surrounding environment. The figurative paintings, which are still work in progress, infer a state of suspension; a presence that is captured within a memory, or the perception of what that memory was. Quell 1 and Quell 2 demonstrate the beginning of my exploration into the theme of memory, and the compositional challenges that are presented to me as a contemporary painter.
