About The Artwork

Rosetta Tharpe was a popular gospel singer in the 30's and 40's and had the first gospel record to crossover to become a hit on the "race records" chart, where she appealed to rhythm and blues audiences. Also known as "the original soul sister" and "Godmother of rock and roll," her guitar playing used heavy distortion giving rise to electric blues and rock. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Little Richard and Tina Turner all said they were influenced by her innovative style. This painting is part of a series: Women Sing The Blues. After watching a documentary about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I started thinking about other female artists who fought to have their voices heard - pioneers who influenced generations of singers and musicians. It is in these paintings, I wanted to capture their strength and beauty.
