Lily recently relocated to rural Cumbria in the UK, and the inspiration for this canvas has been her new immediate surroundings, executed with her trademark techniques. Lily now works from a purpose-built studio located on a working Cumbrian sheep farm. Hares can often be spotted nearby, and became inspiration for new subject matter and colour combinations. Here the hare is set to a background of grey, white, and pale sap green, with warmth from washes of burnt sienna inks. A varnish finish adds texture, depth, and protection. The color palettes are designed to be vibrant and bold without being garish. Lily has developed a unique way of working, using reproductions of her own paintings as collage material on a canvas. Here the 'source' painting of the hare, from which Lily's collage material is derived, has been created using acrylics and pen. This has then been reproduced on paper and cut, ready to use on the canvas. The background is painted with acrylics. The use of collage allows the freedom to play with the composition in a way which would otherwise be impossible, allowing quick changes until a design is settled upon. When the hare collage is secured in place, washes of ink have been applied. Finally, a glossy varnish enhances color, adds protection, and offers an opulent shine. Elements of the natural world are common to all of Lily's work, however she would never claim to offer gritty realism. Lily describes it more like focusing on an aspect of its beauty and running with it, seeing where it can be taken. Simplicity is key, which to Lily means creating something which people can hopefully take some pleasure and enjoyment from. The canvas is stretched on a deep edge wooden frame with painted sides. This is set into a made to measure floating/tray frame. The frame is finished with Littlefair's water based non-toxic water stain in 'English Oak'. Ready to hang. Please be aware that there is some surface texture/relief, which is a natural result of the use of the collage, paints and varnish. This has been portrayed as accurately as possible in the additional photographs. Unframed dimensions: 11" x 14" x 1.5" Framed dimensions: 12.4" x 15.4" x 2"

Lily has been painting professionally since 2006, exhibiting widely throughout the UK during that time, and now features in collections worldwide - including Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Australia. Lily exhibited overseas for the first time in 2012, with two shows in Barcelona, and one in Amsterdam. She now works from her studio on a sheep farm in Cumbria, just to the north of the Lake District. Lily's work reflects a love of nature. Her original paintings are often inspired by multitudes in nature (flocks, shoals, gatherings...) and the flow of that multitude, in glorified representations. Lily’s paintings usually employ an element of collage material, however rather than found material, Lily uses paper copies of her own painting or printmaking studies. Koi fish, for example, are meticulously hand-painted, then reproduced, cut, and arranged in a composition on the canvas. Washes of inks are applied, and sometimes additional painted or drawn details, before a clear gloss varnish secures the work and adds an opulent lustre. Work is often oriental in style; Lily is greatly influenced by the colours and aesthetics of eighteenth century printmakers such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, and Japanese kimono design. Lily is interested in finding out what it takes to create an appealing aesthetic - how to create a 'flow' and an energy. For Lily this means a search for balance and beauty. Overall her aims are simple – to create something the viewer can take enjoyment from. Lily is happy to discuss commissioned pieces.
