About The Artwork
The idea behind my satirical character Suzy Spreadwell, from my comic of the same name, or one of the ideas, is to look at fundamentalist, deep-red state religion as we would a fetish. I find the model fits quite well. The premise of the series is that Suzy, just having reached adulthood, is having a great deal of trouble keeping to her Purity Pledge, and florid and often blasphemous fantasies start exploding through her head. This series of paintings arising from that is called "The Sleepy Sins of Suzy Spreadwell." This is another of them, "Behold the Girl," a painting finished on Christmas Eve 2018. Suzy, here inspired by the birth of her savior, dreams about a way to show her love and gratitude for him. Below, Satan fumes confounded, and her family and boyfriend react. 10" x 13" on thick studio board. Note: Text at bottom is for purposes of the print. Does not appear on original.

John Linton Roberson has been an independent cartoonist, writer, and illustrator for over 25 years, and has produced 22 publications as Bottomless Studio since 1998. He is the adapter of Frank Wedekind's Lulu, the creator of Martha, Vladrushka, and Suzy Spreadwell, among others, and the co-creator (with John E. Williams) of Uncle Cyrus. In addition he has also been published by Journey Magazine, Fantagraphics Books, Seven Stories Press and Martian Lit. He is also the editor of the anthology THIS SICKNESS. Pages from his Lulu were exhibited in Munich's Deutsches Theatremuseum as part of their 2014 Frank Wedekind retrospective. Occasionally he is heard, usually at length, on Tim Young's Deconstructing Comics podcast. Some of the influences on his current work include Dave Sim, Dan DeCarlo, Felicien Rops,Terry Southern, Jack Kamen, Molly Kiely, Paolo Serpieri, Emily Kaplan, Norman Lindsay, Carter Tutti and Guido Crepax.
