About The Artwork

'Small Axe' is a piece that infuses text, symbols, and vibrant brush marks to create an eclectic collage of colour and imagery. This piece utilises the 'push' symbol seen on most public doorways, juxtaposed to the androgynous ballet dancer in the top left whimsically moving in an alluring manner. The palm tree cultivates feelings of a tropical beach whilst the small axe hints at destruction and disorder. The piece oozes with contradiction, yet finds balance through its playful composition. 'Small Axe' takes its inspiration from multiple sources. One of its primary inspirations is the song 'Small Axe' by Bob Marley & The Wailers. The upbeat reggae tempo of the song matches the joyful, painterly quality of the work whilst the songs lyrics on revolt and anarchy coincide with the pieces darker, more cryptic use of symbols and imagery.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
