Jimmy Danko’s art is the juxtaposition of classic oil realism presented through the use of vibrant graphic elements, often constructed from multiple layered surfaces. His art explores our collective perception of memories and cultural imagery that persist in our subconscious over time. His art is an incubator for his own inner world– stories of exploration and adventure that have bubbled up as disjointed recollections of hero narratives. Taking cues from commercial signage, many pieces are constructed of wood and steel, and often incorporate layered elements that transcend beyond the traditional rectangular 2D plane. The result is a harmony and dissonance that both nods towards a playful nostalgia but hints at something more subversive. Objects like a plastic toy soldier or a can of Dr. Pepper, over time become peripheral elements of how we chart the past and present. Jimmy Danko presents them back to us as monuments gleaned from our collective unconscious. He aims to present these themes as a shared history, open for individual interpretation, and to remind us how the forgotten small things have peppered our lives, ultimately shaping who we are. Born in Milwaukee Wisconsin and raised on the outskirts of the city – where suburbs met farmland – this landscape became the backdrop for his imagination fueled adventures with colorful plastic figures and characters. It is this catalog of reference that features prominently in his art. Working from his expansive downtown Los Angeles Arts District studio, he continues his adventures in wood, paint and metal. He works with both private and commercial collectors, and counts brands such as Lexus and Converse among his honored clientele. Jimmy Danko offers original works, commissions and archival quality prints.
