About The Artwork

Sons of Pioneers is named after the band Japan's song of the same title; even though the image comes from one of my drawings which has a considerably, if not totally, different theme and tone (and title). During an early stage of work on the painting, Mick Karn's slinky, fretless bass line from the titular song wedged itself in between two of the blue parabolic shapes (before that red line was painted red). The song makes reference to China's Young Pioneers program, but more broadly suggests the personal tolls of enforced, incontestable ideologies, while also hinting at other types of (inner- inter-) personal violence and the violent hunger of and for ideology.

A native and current resident of Austin, Texas, I have been interested in and making art since childhood. My training continued through college in the art departments of St. Edward's and the University of Texas at Austin. My current, abstract work arose, in part, from a fascination with the lines of Ukiyo-e prints and manga illustration. Rather than lines reproduced from drawings to create multiple images, however, the lines of my abstract drawings and paintings are made compositely to create single works. Though Japanese art, directly and through its influence on other artists, has informed my representational art for a long time, my adoption of an abstract style developed from drawing exercises I did while recovering from a bicycle injury that interrupted my regular, studio practice.
