ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"When the child was a child, it walked with its arms swinging. It wanted the stream to be a river, the river a torrent and this puddle to be a sea. When the child was a child, it didn’t know it was a child. Everything was full of life and all life was one. When the child was a child, it had no opinion about anything, it had no habits. It often sat cross-legged, took off running. Had a cowlick in its hair. And didn’t pull a face when photographed." quote: Peter Handke - Song of childhood

Katelijn Bergman, Zeist 1964 France 1985 - 1986 Amsterdam since 1986 Always fascinated by people. Young, old, male, female, children... Their untransparent thoughts and habits, character and emotions. These I find in all layering of life, in present and past. In addition, I want to depict the essence and also allow a sensation of aesthetics. But within those undefinable laws of beauty, I search for an element that lifts the subject into a larger context. Furthermore I try to find a balance between reason and emotion, between what you see and what you feel, between expression and content. I have a perception of things on multiple levels of reality. A process of acquiring, recording, interpreting, selecting and organizing sensory information on a worldly- and personal level. While painting I search for a tension between the objective and the subjective. Between 2016 and 2018 I painted a series called ‘à la recherche du temps perdu’, in search of lost times. Originally it is the title of a novel by Marcel Proust, he wrote in 7 parts, early last century. These paintings have been exposed on several occassions. At the moment I am working on a new series, Shadows & Light.
