I began this painting in 2009 as part of pair of the same scene, and sold the other one, yet only finished this one, (after much changing it around,) in 2020. I 'sort of lost my way with it' and so it was stored away and he would take it out from time to time and think how I could develop it and then alter it accordingly only to find it unsatisfactory and so would store it away again! I finally managed to get it how he wanted it in 2020. The painting is of Piccadilly, the busy navel of the city of Manchester where you can run into all sorts of people and this general impression of stimulant diversity is reflected in a hyperbolic and occasionally surreal way in the figures of the crowd, of which there are many. Rather than paint the crowd en masse, as an anonymous or abstracted form, each figure is painted individually in reference to that aspect of diverse individuality. Consequently, there is plenty of specific detail and incident contained in the scene as well as various styles for representing them. The painting is on wooden fibreboard using acrylic paint and some inks and is varnished.

Michael Gutteridge was born in Manchester, Northern England, birthplace of the industrial revolution. I began painting professionally in 2001, when, after submitting a painting in an Open Exhibition at Stockport Art Gallery, I was invited by them to present a full exhibition of 20 paintings the following year. Since then, I've continued to develop and explore my own unique vision which mostly involves trying to capture exciting, vibrant, stimulating or moodful aspects of the urban landscape, especially of my home city of Manchester and its environs. Especially, just lately, at night. I was recently shortlisted as one of the finalists from 12,000 entries for the Aesthetica Creative Arts competition. My images have been used promotionally by the University of Lancaster, the University of Manchester, in pop videos, in magazines, on the covers of books and even made into postcards by the Manchester Tourist Office. They are exhibited regularly in the North of England, and are in private collections around the world.
