About The Artwork
This was inspired by a walk in the woods on a full, moonlit winter night. It hints at the theme of the circle of life and existentialism with a young, healthy tree on one side and a fallen tree on the other. (Gauguin's "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" was another inspiration.) The path is open for interpretation. Many people have talked to me after viewing it with varying reactions, each bringing their own personal life experiences and expectations into the mix. It seems to have taken on a life of it's own. For those of you familiar with SaatchiOnline, this painting made it quite high up in their showdown in 2011 (the round of 16 out of more than 5000 entries worldwide). It was featured along with some of my other paintings in a quarterly art magazine, Blue Canvas, in the spring of 2012. This is professional artist grade acrylic on four primed, hollow core door panels each measuring 78" high by 30" wide for a total of 78" x 120". It is hung with a simple wood french cleat hanger. My paintings tend to look a little "tighter" online, look at them closely to see that they are quite painterly, showing brushstrokes. Stephen Remick is a painter living in Massachusetts. He received a BFA in Painting in 1986 from Swain School of Design, a small art school in Massachusetts that created a group of Painting graduates, who through Professor David Loeffler Smith, directly trace their lineage back through abstract expressionist Hans Hoffman to Henri Matisse. I'm painting my back yard and the world beyond. Familiar, everyday sights that may only get a peripheral, passing glimpse. In-the-moment scenes… a yard sale, a backyard tree house, or a new house foundation under construction and filled with potential. Signs of prior lives… a centuries old, crumbling foundation who's long gone owner held that same potential as today’s builder, a cemetery reclaimed by the woods. Trying to guide the viewer to think in a deeper way, to realize our connection to each other, our environment, our past, and our future. Also re-connecting with an abstract, color-field series from the early 2000's, with inspiration drawn from land and sky and the abstract expressionist movement.
