ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Still," an Egg Tempera on Clayboard painting, is unframed (with 1 1/2" light wood side panels. Wood grain varies). This painting is part of my "Rising" Series. Press Release is below: TAG Gallery is proud to present "Rising," a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Jaime Coffey. "There are challenging times that ask for discernment, and that process for me has been about identifying my intuition and authentic self. Understanding how I move through the world, and the excitement I feel when I encounter something I might paint brings me to a place of understanding my truth. Certain events brought me awe, longing, or if I paid enough attention, direction." These paintings are a combination of images that Coffey photographed over the last two years. "Each painting is considered from multiple images, my memories, imagination – or something pulling at my heart. I’m finding a need for storytelling, working with internal reflections of my experiences matching my finished paintings." In her studio, Coffey cuts, crops and arranges her photographs until they match an image in her mind. She then starts her work painting in egg tempera, a mixture of egg yolk, dry pigment, and water, mixing her paints for each painting and using Ampersand's Archival Clayboard Panels. Her paintings are filled with multiple layers for each color. Jaime prefers this medium for its nuances between tone, transparency, and vibrancy. "Rising" explores moments of being awestruck that bring reassurance. It’s also centered around stopping to look at the sun or moon. “This little act helps to ground me. I can be more thoughtful with my decisions and more specific with my questions and intentions. "Will I choose to work on being resilient or will I let this difficulty hold me back? I've been working on my mindset and how I chose to look at things, discovering my truth." These paintings are about choosing joy, building a little grit with a positive attitude, and rising above circumstances.

ARTIST BIO Jaime Coffey is a Los Angeles based artist. Originally from Oregon, she attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art, earning her BFA in painting. Prior to moving to California, Coffey developed a passion for travel and in her artwork, explored light studies, as landscapes in foreign places. She spent months traveling throughout Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, and Madagascar, painting on sight and gathering subject matter for her future work. Coffey’s past solo shows at TAG Gallery focused on images spanning Oregon to California, in both “California Series” and “Red Earth.” Working in egg tempera, a mixture of egg yolk, dry pigment and water, she continued her work in light studies, and introduced a subtle narrative between the landscape and wildlife. “Red Earth” brought a specific turning point for Coffey as she was able to voice through her artwork an environmental commentary on fire seasons and the effects of global warming. Coffey’s newest paintings can be found in her series titled “Intentions,” in which she reflects back on her 2005 adventures in the Salar de Uyuni region of Bolivia. Work spans from her original trip, alongside new pieces that represent her recent discoveries of lithium mining. This work is an investigation of human impressions and choices that she depicts as visual paths through the landscape. Coming soon...paintings from Coffey's "Rising" show, her solo at TAG Gallery, in the Los Angeles Miracle Mile Art District. ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings are light studies. Light assists us in understanding landscapes, by experiencing the magnitude and direction in which it allows our vision to flow. As light moves it creates a dialogue between forms by defining them and their negative spaces. By concentrating on light as its own entity, I explore how it manipulates itself around objects and is distinguished through mood. I often seek unfamiliar settings to explore new forms in unique lighting and climate. This invites a sense of play in organic silhouettes and shadows, where I work with nuances between tone, transparency and vibrancy. The titles of my pieces reflect an investigation of inner work with ideas such as peace, capacity and victory, paralleling images that are gentle while others reflect an urgency. I have been exploring the resiliency of our planet’s natural land regeneration in the face of climate change.
