ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sheryl Daane-Chesnut employs an organic and experimental process using minerals with powdered metals, and oil and acrylic paints to create abstract paintings based on the natural environment. Strokes and scratches appear to be exposed from underneath layers of ice and stone, metals float across, transparent layers entrap movement, and the minerals crystallize to create an ice-like surface. This piece attempts to capture the essence of nature's fury and the strength of storms. Daane Chesnut received her BFA from UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara and lives in San Luis Obispo, CA. Her work is represented by galleries throughout the country.

I consider myself an alchemist on canvas. With an experimental approach and a variety of organic and inorganic elements: oils and water media, salts and minerals, earth pigments, solvents, polymers and metals, I pour, layer and etch away to give the work detail and depth and explore the patterning created as materials pool in liquid, ripple in solvents, and dry and crystallize. I strive to create work that is ephemeral and evocative, to embrace the fragility of the earth and bring its beauty into our everyday lives. The initial impetus is capturing the essence of nature, but ultimately, it’s about taking and relinquishing control— knowing how to push the materials and when to acquiesce and let them find their own way. Guiding is important, but sometimes the most wonderful things happen when we let go. Sheryl Daane Chesnut currently lives and works in San Luis Obispo, CA.
