This series was inspired by Spinoza's story and my experience in a religious college, seeing the sisters and religious images in that space all the time and how the history and the pact of domination have an intricate involvement with religious art. So that's my demolition act of this pact.

About the Artist

Alexandre Casagrande

Brazil

The words, with an excess of rhymes, gave me my first artistic expression, after the poems the drawings became more spicy and earned me suspension and shame. I disconnected from rhymes as a teenager, but I continued to love the compositions in the Caribbean island's revolutionary lyrics. This unsuspected path led me towards audiovisual, I fell into the creative department at MTV. Drawing gave me new impulses, but it was the films that carried me and, moving between directing and scriptwriting, I spent good years in this industry, helped to found a cooperative nucleus, and worked with legends like Roberto Farias (the one from the films starring Roberto Carlos) served Gerald Thomas in “A Circus of Kidneys and Livers", I watched young people more promising than me, many other directors and, unfortunately, just a few directors in hundreds of commercials for shampoo, fossil fuel cars, cell phones, and sneaker brands. Advertising provided the basis and a merciless desire to dive back into the authorial field. I wrote poems, and new stories, and created video art for shows by choreographers Lara Pinheiro and Gabi Gonçalves. Once again the drawings led me to paint and shape new materials and everything, or almost everything, seems to flow towards Brazil, the territory that I still discover from my interior, from my peripheral areas.
