About The Artwork

The title of this work comes from the uprooted stump of a small bush at the bottom of the painting that I photographed on a country walk. Many of the other objects in the picture were collected by me on similar walks and drawn from life. I place these natural objects against a white background rather than putting them in a setting in order to give them a more contemporary feel and suggest movement - as if they are about to fall or move away from each other. The subjects in this 'Vanitas' series of paintings are always natural objects that aren't stereotypically 'pretty', but which contain a lot of interesting details. These are the kind of things that we don't normally stop to take notice of, but which have their own kind of beauty. I began this work by drawing in the basic shapes in charcoal, then I started adding details in acrylic. I scaled things up or down in size according to the overall design and added or subtracted elements as I went along. The work was quite a challenge to paint due to all the details involved and the use of an almost 3D kind of perspective in places to add depth. The finished picture is painted on the sides, and varnished for UV protection. It's shipped in a tube.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
