About The Artwork

Sudoku is a translation of nine solved sudoku puzzles. Each puzzle is a particular hue of green. Each hue of sudoku puzzle is translated from its number value into a particular hue value depending on its number. For example, 1 is translated as the lightest value, so the hue is mixed with the most white to create a tone of that hue. 2 has less white added, 3 even less, and so on. 5 is the pure hue of that particular green, then from 6 to 9 tints are created by adding increasing amounts of black so that 9 is the darkest value. Bordering the nine puzzles are each of the hues arranged in their value scales from 1 to 9. Even so, each of the four sides is a different arrangement of the hue value scales. Every corner shows the nine pure green hues, each arranged differently. Every square of color is 1 by 1 inch and was applied using only a palette knife. The total effect of this painting's color arrangement is a taut balance between monochromism and variety. 81 distinct color values are placed for maximum entertainment for the eye-the sudoku puzzle ensures that no two copies of a hue are aligned either vertically or horizontally so that the eye is taking in a complex sample of green possibilities. I wanted to create this work because I have always enjoyed completing sudoku puzzles and wanted to express the quality of the puzzles being a tool for organization rather than the misconception of being a "math game".

From childhood I can remember the feeling of being compelled to draw- I heeded this urge just as I did the sensation of hunger or thirst. That pure and direct drive to create becomes dulled through the advance of years and the "necessities of adulthood". But I think the creative urge, in its many forms, remains as necessary as our biological needs, despite our incapacity to fully understand or give credence to it. I seek to honor this urge by eroding my own resistance to it and allowing that direct relationship between impulse and action to exist again. As humans, we begin drawing before we are even literate. This is true collectively as well as individually. We understand the world through drawing and we think as well as communicate to others through drawing. It's a tool used by all of us. I endeavor to create a figural representation of the abstract in my work. Like Rene Magritte, who considered himself a thinker before an artist, I am a thinker whose medium is drawing, painting, collage. I hope my art speaks to you.
