ABOUT THE ARTWORK

It was a warm winter day on the first of January 2023. So I decided to go on plein-air to the top of the hill where great city view can be observed. I stayed there until the dawn, so I could see all the magic happening when last rays touch the horizon. Some philosophical thoughts has come to me. I live on a saint land, you may not feel the same, until you will see the same magic! This painting is made on 300lb archieved cotton paper with proffesional watercolour paints. There are 4 256 squares sized 1x1 cm which consisting this artwork. Each square - separate colour, in general view this mosaic technique is making the right colourful view. Olena Rublova`s painting has a sentimental taste of sense. Maybe that`s an influence of the wartime state in Ukraine. Pixel squares are like ornaments on Ukrainian military amunition. And as a part of series "Filters of time", it tells the part of the story about her Homeland which she believes will keep existing!

Olena Rublova is a watercolor artist with a background in science. Having received her formal education in biology and ecology, her artistic interests are focused on the issues of biodiversity, portraiture of species, pristine and feral landscapes, and the effect of man and climate change on all. While her work partly reflects her fascination with nature’s beauty, throughout her life Rublova has been witness to the anthropogenic transformation and degradation of her native Donetsk’s environment through industrialization, mining, chemical plant development, and most recently – war. The Russian aggression continues to create devastating consequences for the Ukrainian and regional eco-systems of an unknown scope. Utilizing primarily watercolor, she finds parallels in the characteristics of the technique to the contradictions of a lived reality – its unpredictability, speed, and diverse expressive possibilities. Nowadays Olena is also involved in work on the cultural front because of russia's war on the territory of Ukraine creating project "Filters of time" in pixel style Olena Rublova born in Horlivka, Donetsk region,1987.
