This painting is part of a series of domestic still lives. I start with paper cut outs to simplify the shapes and make a collage to work from. I am inspired by the work of William Scott, Claire Tabouret, Mama Anderson and David Hockney amongst many others. I love colour and will go over and over a piece until it feels right. I sometimes make a colour storyboard from interiors magazines before I start a work. This piece is acrylic on canvas and framed with a white tray frame.

I am interested in colour, texture and pattern. In my figurative work I begin by making mood boards, building up a story using archival photographs, magazines and found images. I'm drawn to domestic scenes using old photos of family and friends as the foundation, then layering in contemporary and vintage interiors. My recent series of still lives are a response to my everyday surroundings. Starting with a strong clear colour identity for the work, I then make cutout paper collages which become the basis for the final painting. I constantly add items then make space, build up layers and then simplify, taking things back to their purest form.
