Tetra reflects my interests in landscape painting with a newly found love for marine life. After a recent holiday to Mexico where I spent a lot of time swimming in the shores of the Caribbean coast I couldn't stop thinking about the thriving life below the surface. Many of my previous paintings have been above land and have featured alien like creatures that have been dreamed up and painted. On the other hand I have found that life beneath the surface fascinates me. Every creature has its own personality and chooses to live within a certain location. The location changes based on sevral factors including finding food and avoiding becoming food. Seeing these tropical fish inspired me in to buying a large fish tank which I have filled with tropical wonders. I find that having a fish tank is very similar to painting on a canvas. With both I am creating an environment and selecting the fish to inhabit the landscape. I have complete control over the composition of every element of the tank and the paintings but occasionally things may slip out of control. Adding one uncompatable fish to the canvas or the tank may upset the whole space.

Through the process of painting with oils on canvas, Jacob Lucas creates vibrant and otherworldly landscapes that appear both playful and expressive. By using collage, water colour and pencil as a starting point for his landscapes, surprising juxtapositions of plants, trees, animals and other structures are pieced together allowing Lucas to construct his own landscape experiences through the process of painting. Lucas also plays with ideas of seduction and paranoia within his landscapes. By using dreams and nostalgic memories, as well as inspiration taken from both traditional and contemporary landscape paintings, his paintings can appear artificial and alien in that features of the natural world are transformed and applied in strange and unfamiliar territories.
