In 1999, I was badly injured in an automobile accident. Several years later, I did a series of 10 oil paintings that depicted certain moments in that accident, from right before it happened until I knew that I would be all right in the hospital afterwards. Each painting represents my thoughts, emotions, and perceptions about that moment in time. The paintings were designed to be viewed in order from one through 10. "Impact" is the fifth painting in the series. It depicts the moment my car, which had been careening out of control on the freeway, hit the center divider of the freeway. At that moment, nothing existed for me, except consciousness of the violence of the impact. The painting is conceptual in that it takes the viewer through a serious of impacts. The viewers eye first hits the blue eyeball in the center of the painting, The viewer's gaze then bounces off that eyeball and hits the larger eyeball in the background, then bounces off of that and goes to the flat background. I did not plan this, but it happened perfectly. This painting is unframed. The edges are neatly painted and it is wired and ready to hang.
