In this piece, I've tapped into the essence of emotion, exploring the layers that compose our inner landscapes through watercolor, and ink. My brushstrokes dance in a semi-abstract realm, bringing an expressionist view of the world to canvas. Laden with symbolism, the artwork evokes the mystery of t...

J Jie Li

About the Artist

J Jie Li

United States

J. Jie Li is a New York–based contemporary fine artist whose layered watercolor and mixed-media compositions explore the liminal landscapes of human existence—traversing desire, loss, resilience, and spiritual awakening. Grounded in a deep reverence for the natural world and informed by the shared vulnerabilities of our epoch, her work addresses a core existential imperative: that the destruction of the physical environment directly mirrors the quiet, systemic decay of the human soul.

Born with a profound connection to Eastern philosophy, J. Li holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Parsons School of Design in New York. Transitioning from a distinguished career in fashion to dedicate herself fully to fine art, her practice is deeply catalyzed by Zen Buddhism, Daoist thought, and Schopenhauerian existential gravity. Subverting watercolor’s traditional reputation for lightness and delicacy, J. Li transforms the medium into a structural, high-gravity vehicle. Through heavy layers of pigment, soot, slate, and expressive ink washes, she juxtaposes dry, scraped textures against fluid, bleeding tones—channeling the untamed energy of cursive calligraphy (Kuangcao) and the raw momentum of large-scale freehand ink (Daxiei).

Spanning eight seminal bodies of work—from early inquiries like Fire and Desire and Echoes of the Silence to profound meditations on grief, impermanence, and universal compassion in The Weeping Requiem, The Mirror of Existence, Interbeing, and Surge & Void— J. Li’s art moves from outward observation to inner contemplation. Her paintings turn wind-carved cliffs, dry riverbeds, and vanishing coastlines into emotional topographies, reminding viewers that even in structural dissolution, an unbroken current of hope endures.

J. Jie Li’s work has been exhibited internationally at prestigious institutional venues, including the Royal Academy of Arts and Mall Galleries in London, as well as the Springfield Art Museum, Alexandria Museum of Art, and Ormond Memorial Art Museum in the United States. A Board Member and Signature Member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society and a Signature Member of the American Artists Professional League, she is the recipient of major global accolades, including First Place at the Alfa Awards (2025) and the Kenneth M. Shuck Memorial Cash Award at Watercolor USA (2024).
