People are sometimes captivated by images without knowing why. Certain paintings evoke inexplicable emotions and awaken a desire to possess them. ROZ defines this phenomenon as “attraction” — a pull that she believes is rooted in the cartoon-like characters that surrounded us in childhood. Focusing on this sense of instinctive allure, ROZ creates paintings that feature human and animal characters, visualized like emotional afterimages. These figures carry a nostalgic yet unresolved energy, forming the emotional core of her practice. Her signature character, ROZEE, is a fictional being born from the question, “Does the universe really exist?” Living in space and managing its order, Rozee represents a fragmented self — one that reflects the struggles and routines of modern life. Always by her side is Lu, a bunny doll once discarded as space junk on Earth. Through Rozee’s companionship, Lu overcomes isolation and trauma to be reborn as a symbol of resilience and renewal. ROZ’s work blurs the line between digital and traditional media, visualizing emotional density within narratives that drift between reality and imagination. With delicate and intentional brushwork, she separates and highlights key elements of each character, granting a flat, cartoon-like form a tangible presence. Her characters explore suppressed feelings, identity restoration, and the yearning for connection — not just cute or endearing, but also deeply human. “What is it that truly attracts you?”
