About The Artwork

The Black Mountains are a range of hills and mountains in Wales.  The painting is based on the coal waste heap from coal mining on Blorenge hill in Black Mountains, a Blaenavon World Heritage Site. Below, a Turkish woman mourns at the grave of her son, victim of the largest coal mine disaster. Nothing in common, everything in common. The burial of the charcoal mourns the end of the fossil energy era and celebrates the endless cycles of rejuvenation.

Richard Lake is Dutch artist, living in Eindhoven. Based on a deep interest in philosophy and humanism, he creates work to reflect on mankind. His active painting life started in 2020. Inspiration is found in nature, music and all the great art of the past. …We don’t know where we came from or - where we are going. Mankind has the brains to find out, but can’t. Art celebrates that uncertainty. Ecce Homo; why do love, hate, live, die…
