About The Artwork

This painting, The Call of Shofar, is one of my series dedicated to the Book of Zohar and features a quote from the book on the frame. I produced this series when I studied Kabbalah. Shofar is ritual musical instrument, made from the horn of a ram, used on important Jewish public and religious occasions. Typically, it is blown during Rosh HaShana (the Jewish New Year). Hearing the shofar’s call is a reminder to look inward and repent for the sins of the past year. The inscription on the frame in Hebrew: “Trust in the Lord forever and ever, for the Lord is G-d, an everlasting rock. Trust in the Lord means that all the people in the world should strengthen themselves in the Creator and have confidence in Him.” (The Book of Zohar) This text is done in the technique know as Assist gilding. This work requires technical knowledge and skills as it is very difficult to correct mistakes. Firstly, adhesive size is applied to the areas that will be enhanced with gold. Then genuine gold leaf (23.75 karat) is applied to those areas and the rest is removed with a soft brush. Egg tempera on wood, protected with varnish. Ready to hang, no frame required, 12x16 inches.

ICON PAINTER, EGG TEMPERA ARTIST, EDUCATOR Since adolescence, Alina Smolyansky has been a capable artist, initially dedicated to watercolour painting. However, in recent years, after following not only her parents, but also her grandfather into a career in engineering, she started looking for more meaning, both in her life and her art. In 2008, this search brought her to an icon painting class. Inspired by this new art form, Alina now paints traditional Eastern Orthodox icons as well as other paintings, using traditional egg tempera, an over a-thousand-year-old technique. Egg tempera attracted Alina by its simplicity, purity of colours, and above all its history and traditions. Alina’s inspiration stems from Eastern Orthodox icons, mediaeval manuscripts, and the serenity of nature. Alina is also one of the few teachers of egg-tempera painting and traditional Eastern Orthodox icon painting in North America. Alina holds a BA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University, as well as a diploma in Architecture. Her works are in private and public collections in Canada, United States, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Thailand and Israel. She lives in Vancouver, Canada, and is available for commissions, presentations, workshops, classes.
