About The Artwork

I have long loved iconographic multi panelled work from the 8th and 9th century orthodox christian tradition. Their use of bold colour, halos, gold and the miniature portable nature of they way they are made adds to their presence. Here I have tried to subvert the tradition by using a sad looking monkey, one side giving her a halo and a blue coat, the other nothing. It would be great to think that we may be moving towards the idea that we should respect animals and the environment, possibly even worship animals? The wood as always is reclaimed from the marine environment and treated to take oil paint, and finished with dolls house hinges. Despite the sad faces, this object optimistically points towards a happier time for both animals and humans.
