The works initial starting point was the 1936 olympics black and white photo in Berlin. This diving board and the stadium still exist. The image has never been in color (like many of my works they start from a black and white image and the paint begins to transform the image into another reality). This work along with The house in floods and fire, The last Flight, all addressed the economic collapse that came to America and Europe in 2008-2012. Just as the people of Europe could not have known the full extent of what future awaited the peoples of the world in 1936 we In Europe had no idea what the future would be for the EU as a union during this crash and in particular my own country, Ireland. The houses in floods and fire , I believe are all unconcious manivestations of this precarious sense of home. It takes me a very long time to pick an image to work from. I had the diver photo for over 2 years in my archives before I decided it was right and to finally paint it!! I knew after the "Last flight "was completed that the Diver was the next right image in this series. Please also note that the piece works on the micro level also ie 1 man, woman facing those large questions in life. To rise to the challenges that face us or to fear them.....

In the images Llewellyn works with he combines painting's history and techniques with images from the 1900s to the present day. These images and painting techniques, influenced by Titian to Bacon, are overlapped with each other to create a rich multi-layered experience. This creates a precarious balance between the past and the present leaving the audience with a sense of dislocation from a definite time and place. Man Sleeping in LA Apartment (2011) is a direct conversation with Jusepe de Ribera's Jacob Dream (1639). He is also interested in painting the misfit in society and the private personal moments that painting's light is not normally shone on, for example The Patient (2010) and Father and Son (2011). His work is primarily a dialogue with the history of painting itself and in particular the figure. It does not recognise one period in painting over another. Rather, it is inspired by consistency in quality and the discovery of successful new realities in paint. Llewellyn's work has been exhibited throughout Ireland, England and Germany and is found in both private and public collections throughout the world.
